The most amazing thing about kids is that they will just keep going. Nothing in their wiring tells them to chill out when they are tired, or just relax when it is down time. Thankfully this strange wiring had Emma walking all the way to Heart Lake and back (about 3 miles) and all the way around Rock Creek Lake (about 2 miles.) Unfortunately this strange wiring also had Sam spent by the second day we were there and therefore a wreck the rest of the time. He still did not miss out on anything and as long as someone was willing to play cards he would sit down for periods of time.
The whole gang this year. Aiden, keeping to tradition, did not want to be in the group picture but you can make out his hat behind the post. The sign reads, beauty around every corner. The trail runs semi parallel to the river which runs from one small lake to the next. The first lake is Marsh Lake and then Heart Lake which is as far as we made it with the kids this year, except for Sam who went all the way to Long Lake and then proceeded to melt on the hike back. For me the lakes go according, first snack lake, then beach/play lake, then beauty lake with maybe some frogs, then throw in some rocks lake.
Aiden, Leah, and Emma enjoying the view. Leah carried the camel-back this year and was very patient with Aiden and Emma who were thirsty VERY often.
Sam loved wading in freezing water and then discovered a great game of being the troll under the bridge and scaring the hikers that were passing over. Thankfully most people had their sense of humor in check and would keep walking on with a chuckle at this cute, freckled face troll.
Leah is my little mountain goat and so is Emma for that fact, so which ever rock Leah had climbed up Emma was soon to follow.
My three little bumps on a log.
Peace out Emma. She loved this bridge and once over the fear of a troll living underneath it claimed it as her own.
The kids seeing if a troll lives underneath the bridge and then many games of stick racing. I think Emma was the champion.
Along the walk there are many areas to sit down and admire the beautiful world that we are walking in.
On the trek down Emma would occasionally loose steam so I would hold her hand and with every step announce if it was a little step or a big step over a rocks. The flow of words went, little, little, little, little, BIIIIIg, lit, lit, lit Bbbbig, little, little, Bib, BIG, BIGGGG. We must have been caught up in our sing, songy stroll for about 10 min when I glanced behind me, on the narrow path, only to find to my horror a man trailing closely behind us. Immediately stopping and pulling Emma to the side I said, "So sorry, hope you were stuck behind us too long" to which he replied, "It's ok I liked the rhythm"
Love this hike, love the kids enthusiasm to see what is around the corner and to get to the next lake. Love the breath taking beauty, fresh air, and above all the stroll of little and big steps.
